Advice
on the legislation and on your
obligations as employer |
Current legislation and standards
require that all electrical equipment is properly maintained to prevent danger and ensure safety of all persons using the work premises. Hence
systematic risk assessment, inspection and testing
is necessary and also to set maintenance schedules.
Failure to comply with regulations can be costly. There can be accidents leading to claims made against your company or organization. There is also the possibility of invalidating your insurance policies, or a very expensive policy cover.
The frequency of inspection and testing will depend upon the likelihood of maintenance being required and the consequences of lack of maintenance.
Factors such as environment, the users, equipment construction, and equipment type need to be considered.
On completion of the testing you will be issued with a safety certificate and a detailed report that provides information on each individual item.

PERIODIC INSPECTION OF FIXED ELECTRICAL INSTALLATIONS
The purpose of periodic inspection and testing is to
ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the safety of persons and livestock against the effects of electric shock and burns, protection against damage to property by fire.
Periodic inspection and testing of electrical installations is
also necessary because all electrical installations deteriorate due to factors such as wear and tear, excessive electrical loading, corrosion, ageing and environmental influences.
Licensing authorities, public bodies, insurance companies, mortgage lenders and others may require periodic inspection and testing of fixed electrical installations.
Periodic inspection and testing should be considered:
| >
on change of occupancy of the premises |
| >
after alterations and additions to the original installations |
| >
where damage may have been caused to
an installation |
Frequency of inspection and testing depend on these factors:
|
| >
type of insulation
|
| >
its use and operation
|
| >
the frequency and quality of maintenance,
and
|
| >
the external influences that the installation is subjected
