Hazardous substances are used in many areas in engineering related industries. Not only are they found in the obvious places, such as shop floor, but they are also used in other workshop areas, e.g. woodwork, welding, machining, fabrication, degreasing and within support areas, e.g. assembly, cleaning, maintenance, stores, etc. They may be used as single substances or as preparations, often with a trade name. In order for staff and visitors to be protected from these materials, assessments must be made, in accordance with the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations, covering the risk to health of those exposed to them

COSHH assessments are often perceived as complex and difficult – but this does not have to be the case. Once an estimation of the risk has been made, suitable control measures can be put in place together with other requirements. This seminar will focus on the essential information that is required and the basic steps necessary to make a ‘suitable and sufficient’ COSHH assessment specifically for the engineering workplace. The new Workplace Exposure Limits (WELs) which came into force in April 2005 will be discussed.

The key component of a COSHH assessment is communication. People who are exposed to hazardous materials are entitled to be informed about the risks and what is being done to reduce them. The seminar will address this area and present a new type of approach using clear, straightforward and graphical representation for hazard communication.

Most people find Safety Data Sheets (SDS) "too technical" and difficult to understand and yet key pieces of information are to be extracted from the SDS in order to make suitable and sufficient COSHH assessments. The seminar will show how this can be done with ease. The speakers have many years of working experience in the field of COSHH in engineering related activities and will make the seminar practical and relevant. There will be a case study presented by a Health & Safety Manager from an engineering company
