Hazardous
substances
are used in many areas in schools, colleges
and university establishments. They are not only found in the obvious places, such as
in the science, labs, but they are also used in other
teaching areas, e.g. art, woodwork,
engineering, hairdressing, and within
support areas, e.g. catering, cleaning,
maintenance, etc. They may be used as single
substances or as preparations, often with a
trade name. In order for staff and students
to be protected from these materials,
assessments must be made, in accordance with
the Control of Substances Hazardous to
Health (COSHH) Regulations, covering the
risk to health of those exposed to them.
